Haleiwa is a town beside the North Shore of Hawaii and is far from the hustle of Waikiki.
More than a 100 years ago, even before Waikiki built its first hotel, businessman Benjamin J. Dillingham started Hawaii’s lodging on a small strip of land between the Ocean and the Anahulu River where the famous Haleiwa Bridge is located. He named hotel "Haleiwa" which means "House of the Iwa."  An Iwa is a beautiful bird, and he said, created the ambience he wanted for the hotel.
This hotel near the North Shore of Oahu is gone now, but Haleiwa continues to welcome visitors. This town in Hawaii was named a Cultural and Scenic District in 1984. Haleiwa has maintained its charm and laid-back environment. Old storefronts line the main street of Haleiwa Hawaii. This is definitely a casual kind of place.
Haleiwa offers a nice selection of  galleries, surf shops and places to eat. Be sure to visit the North Shore Surf & Cultural Museum, located at the North Shore Marketplace. The museum features surfing memorabilia, including antique surfboards and photos that chronicle the history of the surfing.
